The Local Plans Team is responsible for the preparation of planning policy in South Staffordshire. Working with key stakeholders, local communities and colleagues in other service areas, the Local Plans section contributes to the Council’s corporate aims and objectives in improving the environment and shaping the places where we live.

The Local Plans team does not deal with planning applications. If you would like to know whether or not you need planning permission for a proposal, please click here or telephone 01902 696000 or email planning@sstaffs.gov.uk.

The Development Plan

The Council has a statutory duty to prepare a development plan, which provides the planning framework for all new development in South Staffordshire.  The current Development Plan for South Staffordshire consists of:

  • The Adopted Core Strategy, 2012

The Core Strategy is the first part of the new Local Plan for South Staffordshire. Once adopted, the Site Allocations Document (SAD) will complete the Local Plan. Consultation on Issues and Options for the SAD will begin in early 2014.

The development plan must also be consistent with National Policy known as the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and further details can be found on the Communities and Local Government website.

The Government introduced changes to the planning system in 2004 when the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act came into force.  This has also been amended by the Localism Act 2011.

The South Staffordshire Local Plan will be made up of a number of separate documents, which collectively will guide development in the District.  As and when the Council adopts documents in the Local Plan, they will supersede policies in the currently adopted Local Plan.
