Food Complaints

No matter how good a manufacturer or supplier of food is, there will be occasions when something goes wrong and the food sold is not acceptable to the customer. These will often be picked up by the manufacturer or supplier and an  Link for Food Alerts will be made.

The Food & Safety Team investigates complaints which may pose a public health threat. The aim of our investigation is to find out how and why the complaint happened, and if possible, to prevent it happening again.

Examples of the type of food complaints we deal with include:

  • Unfit food e.g.  Decomposing meat
  • Food that is so contaminated that it could not reasonably be eaten e.g. mouldy foods
  • Food which contains something which is not of 'substance' demanded, eg foreign objects in food - a bolt in a loaf of bread.
  • Food causing illness
  • Food sold outside of its “use by” date

There are certain types of complaint that are not dealt with by the team at South Staffordshire Council, namely:

  • Food sold outside the South Staffordshire Council boundary
  • Incorrectly labelled food
  • Incorrectly weighed food
  • Poor quality food

These matters can be dealt with either by the local authority in whose area the food was purchased; or in the last three cases by Staffordshire Trading Standards at the County Council.

Complaints investigated by Trading Standards can be taken to their offices in Stafford, or if brought to the South Staffordshire Council offices we will arrange to transfer them on your behalf.

Your questions answered

If you wish to make a complaint here are a few points to help you and us

DO:

  • keep the food in the original wrapper or container
  • keep perishable food under temperature control, preferably in the fridge or if not the freezer (especially
  • If your complaint involves decomposition or tastes or smells “off”)  keep receipts (not essential but helpful)

DON'T:

  • If there is a foreign object in your food item – leave it where it is.  Don’t be tempted to tamper with it or pull it out.  This could affect the evidence we need.
  • Put the food in somewhere where further deterioration could take place (instead put it in the fridge but separate from other foods)
  • Throw away any of the food or the packaging

If you would like to make a complaint regarding food please contact the Food & Safety Team.
