We understand how difficult dealing with a death can be, and Bereavement Services can help to provide advice on many of the practical things that need to be done at this sad time.

Apart from registering the death and arranging a funeral, there are many other matters to be dealt with and some of these are listed below.  Please note that these are not intended to be exhaustive lists but should give you some ideas of the items that need to be considered.

You should inform the following people of the death.

  • The Direct Services department of the Council.  You may need to provide information about Council Tax, Business Rates and Benefits
  • If the person who died was living in a Housing Association house then you will need to inform South Staffordshire Housing Association
  • The Inland Revenue
  • Any hospital the person was attending
  • The water suppliers, if the deceased was responsible for the water rates
  • The deceased’s electricity, gas and telephone suppliers
  • The deceased’s landlord (if applicable)
  • The family doctor
  • Any relevant banks or building societies
  • The Post Office (for the redirection of mail)
  • Any pension providers
  • Any insurance company (including home, contents and car covers)

You should send the following items of the deceased back to the relevant people.

  • Passports
  • Any pension or benefit cheques
  • Driving licence
  • Library books and tickets
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Travel passes
  • Season tickets (you may be able to claim a refund for the remaining time left on the ticket)
  • National Insurance papers
  • Membership cards of clubs and associations
  • Any property of the NHS such as wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids etc.
