Schools and Business Forum - 25th March 2015

Want to help shape the skills of your future work force?

South Staffordshire Council would like to invite you to a short workshop on the 25th March (4.30pm at South Staffordshire Council Offices, Wolverhampton Road WV8 1PX) to discuss ways in which local businesses and local schools can collaborate to help prepare our future workforce for the world of work.

Last year in partnership with the Southern Staffordshire Employment and Skills Board, we commissioned some research to better understand the future skills needs of the economy. Part of this was to consult local businesses and other stakeholders in the local economy to determine what they saw as the priorities for the future in respect of developing and growing a skilled workforce.

Some of those priorities centred around securing a better relationship between the world of business and the world of education - to address what was seen by some as too many of those leaving education not being best prepared for the world of work. Whilst the success in educational attainment was acknowledged, there was a view that more could be done around some of the softer skills regarding the transition from education to business, and more could be done to provide pupils/students with practical experience of business and what businesses expected.

This has been discussed with a number of local South Staffordshire schools, along with a briefing on the type of jobs and skills that the future economy would demand. There was a clear appetite to work more closely with any businesses willing to support activities to help with the transition to the workplace.

The workshop will explore support for a range of activities that were initially discussed at the meeting with local schools. These included support for CV writing and mock interviews; participating in Careers Fairs and work experience sessions; Dragons Den type events; themed enterprise days; visits to local businesses; speakers from business going into schools; and business based projects to develop team working, task management, costing, marketing and sales - to name just a few.

Every business is hard pressed at the moment so the more we can support our school leavers to have the right skills sets, the more benefit we can get from our future workforce.

We hope you can support us in this important activity. If you would like to take part please confirm you attendance at regeneration@sstaffs.gov.uk or call 01902 696000 and ask for Andrew Lindop.
