COMBATING BENEFIT FRAUD

South Staffordshire Benefit Services are committed
to protecting public funds b y preventing, detecting and
prosecuting benefit fraud.
- Nationally, benefits amounting to £3 billion
was claimed and spent by benefit thieves.
- This was £3 billion that could have been spent
on your local services providing teachers, doctors, improving
roads, benefiting the whole community.
- In 2011-12 South Staffordshire Benefit Services
prosecuted 20 local people for benefit offences and issued 62
sanctions in the form of Administrative Penalties and Formal
In 2011-12 South Staffordshire Benefit Services
identified Housing and Council T ax Benefit overpayments amounting
to £538,000. Benefit overpaid as a result of fraudulent claims is
being actively recovered from the fraudsters.
You can help South Staffordshire Benefit Services to
save public monies by reporting suspicions of benefit fraud on the
Benefit Fraud Hotline: 0500 658 008.
South Staffordshire Council will take action against
any person or group proven to have committed benefit fraud.
The following sanctions are available to the council:
- Administrative Penalty - this is a fine. Which
provides for a minimum penalty of £350.00 or 50% of the
benefit overpayment, which ever is greater, upto a maximum
penalty of £2000.
- A Local Authority Formal Caution
We will name those people prosecuted successfully
for benefit fr aud on the Council’s website and in the press and we
will recover vigorously the benefits fraudulently obtained using
all methods available to us, including:
- Recovery from other benefits
- Recovery from Capital assets
- Freezing bank accounts and assets where
South Staffordshire Council jointly works with
appropriate organisations to investigate benefit fraud and
undertakes prosecutions with other government departments so that
the courts can see the full lev el of the fraud committed and
sentence those found guilty accordingly.
